Have You Noticed Issues With Your Mini Split?

With each change of season, one of our service techs arrives on a ductless system repair call only to find that the problem was a simple one that could have been resolved by the owner. If you check out these things, you may find you won't need our help after all:

Does your system have power?
- If you are still using hand-held remotes, ensure that the batteries are fully powered and replace them now.
- Confirm your circuit breaker for your outdoor unit and make sure you have not had a nuisance trip, ensuring your heat pump system has power.
- Check the outdoor disconnect typically mounted next to your outdoor unit to ensure that it is on.

Verify your system settings:
- Be certain that one zone is set to on and the desired temperature is set well above ambient for heating operation, or below ambient for cooling operation.
- If you are in heat mode, make sure that your heating system is not in defrost mode. Wait a few minutes for your system to complete its defrost cycle.
- When the breaker was shut down, after flipping the switch, wait a few minutes: many systems have a built-in time delay.

If your system is on, but not heating or cooling properly:
- Check your indoor unit filters. If your filters have not been cleaned lately, clean them now.

Common Mini Split Heat Pump Service Issues:

By far the most prevalent cause of mini split heat pump problems is a bad installation. We are aware of how efficient and comfortable all ductless heat pump systems can be, but if they are improperly sized, or improperly installed, they can fail to live up to your expectations. Common problems include:

Issues caused by improper installation:
- Refrigerant loss due to improper or flawed installation, or mechanical damage. This will most commonly result in reduced system capacity.
- Improper zone sizing: If an indoor unit is too small it will fail to properly heat or cool in extreme weather. If it is too big, it will merely cycle on its lowest output and fail to properly dehumidify.
- Condensation Leaks caused by indoor units installed out of level, or crimped or obstructed condensate lines.
Issues caused by lack or maintenance or component failure
- Up and down changes in heating or cooling capacity over time caused by loss of refrigerant, or technique maintenance. Dirty indoor or outdoor coils.
- Noisy operation indoors caused by a dirty filter or indoor coil.
- Noisy outdoor unit may indicate a motor, compressor, or reversing system failure.
- Outdoor unit fails to start may be caused by improper wire or breaker sizing, a tripped fuse, or failed outdoor device.
- Indoor zone fails to start may be caused by loose or defective control wiring, or obstructed or failed IR receiver.
